I wondered whether my sweeping had disturbed this praying mantis as he was near the stairs at the back of the house, and not safely in a bush. He was still camoflagued well. Usually the praying mantises in our garden are green so I took some time to take in his brown colour and noticed the subleties in tone and patterns. The feeling of busyness from the morning of washing clothes, sweeping and clearing cobwebs was gone. I felt mesmerised. As often happens when witnessing something special I wished my daughter was home to see this friend, and as she was at school the camera came out.
The praying mantis as a totem animal speaks of patience, a meditative state and stillness between action. Waiting for the right time for action. Very apt!
