It was my first booking for the year of the hospital familiarisation incursion today. Since it was so sunny and warm it seemed only appropiate to freshly wash and air the doll’s clothes to keep all my babies happy! Also the hospital bed had a few chips from all it’s travels and needed some painting. I used to work as a kindergarten assistant and am grateful to the teachers I worked with for showing me how to ‘tend’ to equipment and the toys. Jobs which often are thought of as chores can be enjoyable in themselves if you give them the time they need rather than trying to get it finished as quickly as possible! Earlier in the week I sat down and sharpened about 50 colouring pencils whilst enjoying a conversation with a child, it was really relaxing. Children also love to help with cloths to wax tabletops, wooden figurines or blocks, sweep, weed gardens… If the materials are natural they can also usually be mended by gluing, sanding, waxing, sewing, or repurposing. I have found that if you treat the materials you present to the children with care, they will be careful too.
